The New Holstein Taildragger Flyin has been a great venue for flying in, camping, dining, participating in terrific flyouts, meeting fellow aviators and “roughing it” for 6 days just prior to nearby AirVenture. The New Holstein airport (8D1) is located less than 20 miles from Oshkosh, just across Lake Winnebago. Roughing it, you ask? If you can call camping on a prestine, grassy airport; sheltering in a beautiful pavilion; enjoying exquisite breakfasts and catered dinners; and beautiful shower facilities on the airport roughing it…that is what we call roughing it! Arrivals occur on Thursday, July 17, with flyouts beginning the next day to nearby airports and to Washington Island…home of the famous Washington Island Fishboil. Sunday, July 20 is Airport Appreciation Day at 8D1, where we participate in a Young Eagles Rally at which we typically give over 100 Flights! The afternoon is time for the STOL and Flour Drop Exhibition, attended by hundreds of locals, featuring pilots from all categories showing their short field skills. A bus takes us to AirVenture on Monday, July 21, returning in time for one more evening of campfires, dinner and breakfast the next morning before breaking camp.
This is an awesome way to kick off AirVenture, seeing old friends and making new ones! See www.fonha.org for details and to register for the event!
